Ferdinand Roybet, Large Oil Painting on Cradled Panel, "The Poet"

Sale Price:$7,500.00 Original Price:$9,995.00

An oil on panel painting by French artist, Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920) entitled “The Poet”. The painting depicts a gentleman in 17th Century style clothing in deep thought as he is in the creative process of composing. He is dressed in a cloak with wonderfully detailed buttons and lace collar and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Before him he holds sheet music and adjacent is a quill pen and inkwell, a paperweight holding down some leaflets and two leather-bound books. The face is nicely detailed with broad strokes and impasto.

The painting and frame are in very good overall condition. There appears to be a small crack in the top center of the panel that has been restored. The site area of the painting measures 39 1/4” x 31” and overall with the gilt frame measures approximately 46 1/2” x 38”. The painting was previously sold at Christie’s New York, 9/06/2006, Lot 171.
