French School, 19th Century Oil on Panel Depicting Soldier with Rapier Sword

$895.00

A French School, 19th Century oil on panel painting of a French or Dutch Soldier standing in an interior holding a cup-hilt rapier sword in his right hand. The soldier wears a gray hat with red feather, lace collar and red cache with leather and brass buckled belt and leather gloves. He stand in an interior adjacent to a pillar and bluish-green draperies. There is a portrait painting on the wall behind him. The painting appears to be signed lower right, but is not legible. The image is quite detailed and colorful for such a small painting.

The visible image measures 9 5/8” x 6 3/4” (although the label on the back states the painting is 10 1/2” x 7 1/2”. The overall size with the gilt frame is 13 3/4” x 11”. The painting is in generally good condition, although the back of the panel appears to have some cracking and pest damage (not active), but this does not impact the visible surface of the painting at all. The label on the back provides provenance from Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco, CA. The painting has been in my collection for several years, hanging on my wall.
