A large oil on canvas painting entitled “The Royal Messenger” depicting a 17th Century style messenger in uniform with his horn strapped to his back and sword on his hip with his royal steed. The painting is by Sir John Gilbert (1817-1897), an English artist known for his historical paintings. The painting bears the artist monogram and the date of 1865.

The painting measures 42 1/4” x 30 1/4” and overall with the frame measures 49” x 37”. The painting is in overall good condition with an old tear to the lower background which has been professionally repaired and restored. There are a few minor abrasions to the outside of the frame.

John Gilbert was an accomplished oil painter, watercolorist, and illustrator whose affinity for Romantic narrative scenes gained him the nickname "the Scott of painting" (a parallel to novelist Sir Walter Scott). Gilbert served as president of the Royal Watercolor Society in the 1870s, he was knighted in 1872, and he was inducted into the Royal Academy in 1876. Today, his paintings are held in numerous permanent museum collections across the UK and around the world. The artist has a strong record of sales with the highest price achieved at an auction at Christies for $20,000 in 2011.
