Leon Duluard, Oil on Panel Painting, The Standard Bearer

An oil on mahogany panel painting by French artist, Hippolyte Francois Leon Duluard (1871-1953) entitled by nameplate “Le Porte-Etendard” or “The Standard Bearer” depicting a cavalier or French Courtier holding a flag. The figure figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, and has curly hair and mustache. HIs green doublet and lace collar are finely depicted with swirls of color, and he wears a pinkish-orange cache. He holds the flag in his left hand over his left shoulder with his right hand on his hip. The painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist and named to the plaque on the gilt frame. There is a beautiful impasto in this painting. This artist’s paintings do not come up very often in auction. His high auction price was $11,290 in 2017 at Bonham’s in London.

The painting measures 16” x 12 1/2” and overall with the gilt frame measures 20 5/8” x 17 1/4”. The painting was professionally cleaned in 2020 by Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago, IL. The frame is in original unrestored fine condition.
