Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel, Oil on Canvas - Les Mousquetaires du Roi

$95,000.00

One of the most fantastic paintings we have ever offered, this oil on canvas painting by French artist, Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel (1839-1929), entitled “Les Mousquetaires du Roi” or “The King’s Musketeers” is one of the largest paintings this artist has produced. Most of his paintings are small to medium sized panels or canvases, but this one is of monumental size and scope. The subject appears to be a large celebration with musketeers, musicians and a royal paige. The group occupy the interior of a castle, with the central focus being an auburn haired woman with a musket over her shoulder and holding an ivory tankard. Surrounding the woman are musicians with instruments and soldiers engaged in a tremendous celebration. On the left is a man that appears to be a royal paige reading a proclamation from the king. On the right side of the painting are soldiers in armor gambling at dice. There is a model of a full knight in armor mounted on a model of a horse wearing armor behind the entire group. There is also a model of a knight in armor on the right side of the painting. There are two arched stone windows in the back of the painting with another castle, or possibly the Bastille seen through the left window. On the far left of the painting is a stone staircase. In the foreground, a trumpet with banner lays on the floor. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left corner, A. A. Lesrel 1885. The entire painting image is a feast for the eyes with every single figure painted in exquisite detail. The lower portion of the woman’s dress, in particular, really draws your attention and dazzles you with it’s fine depiction.

The painting measures 34 5/8” x 47 9/16” (nearly 3’ high x 4’ wide) and with the amazing gilt frame measures 47” x 59” (nearly 4’ high x 5’ wide). The frame itself is approximately 6 1/2” wide and 6” deep. This is an extremely heavy frame and must be reinforced when hanging. The painting and frame are in very good condition. The painting has some craquelure, which is typical with age. The very outside corners of the frame have had some losses and minor repair and touch-up paint to match.
