Suite of 3 Oil Paintings by Ferdinand Roybet and Pen and Ink Sketch by the Artist

Sale Price:$13,500.00 Original Price:$20,000.00

This is a suite of 3 painting by French artist, Ferdinand Roybet along with a pen and ink sketch by the artist which appears to be a study for the central painting. The central painting is an oil on canvas and depicts King Charles standing in a courtyard before a gothic cathedral with his cavalier supporters hoisting a toast to the king. The painting is signed lower right and dated 1874, which is an early painting for Roybet. This painting is an oil on canvas and measures approximately 32 1/4” x 41” and overall with the gilt frame measures 37” x 47 1/2”. The painting has some old losses and restoration, most likely a number of campaigns over the years, but was recently cleaned and varnished by Chicago Fine Art. It is presented in a gilt gesso composition and wood frame. The painting has been taped at the edges with black book-binding tape, and in certain areas of the frame opening some areas of the tape can be seen, but is not distracting.

The pen and ink sketch is the exact same collection of individuals as the painting and in the exact same poses as in the painting. There are differences in the background, and in the foreground instead of dogs, there is armor on the floor. It is likely that in creating the oil painting, Roybet decided to use the same scene of people but to make it more elaborate with the Gothic cathedral and dogs in the foreground. The visual area of the sketch measures approximately 8” x 10 1/4” and overall with the gilt frame measures 16” x 19”.

The cavalier in green in an interior with lace collar and large mustache stands proudly, turned to the right (his left) and looking directly at the viewer. He is grasping his glove in his left hand. This painting is an oil on panel and is housed in a Louis XV style pierced gilt gesso composition and wood frame. The painting and frame are in very good condition. The panel measures 31” x 25” and overall with the gilt frame measures approximately 38 1/2” x 31”.

The cavalier in red before a landscape stands proudly holding his walking stick in his left hand and turned to the left, (his right) looking directly at the viewer. This is an oil on panel painting presented in a gilt gesso composition and wood frame. This painting is signed in two locations on the painting, both upper right and on the red cloak of the cavalier. The panel measures approximately 32” x 25 1/2” and overall with the gilt frame measures approximately 43 1/4” x 37”. The painting and frame are in very good condition. The frame has had a repair on the central right element, which has been remolded and repainted to match the left element.
