Oil on Canvas Painting of Knight on Horseback "Robbing the Farmer's Wife" 1896

Sale Price:$3,500.00 Original Price:$4,500.00

A large oil on canvas painting signed with what appears to be “L Voir” with date of ‘96 for 1896. The scene depicts a knight or Landsknecht on horseback along with his squire who are apparently robbing the farmer’s wife as she pleads to the knight. Her broken eggs are on the ground.

Many paintings of knights are romantic and idealized, but in truth often a knight or Landsknecht (German Feudal Knight) would take what they needed from townsfolk and farmers, and this painting appears to be showing the other side of soldiers and their robbing and raiding activities.

The painting image measures approximately 29” high and 40” wide and with the frame measures approximately 43 1/4” high and 56” wide. The frame is large and very heavy. There are some old repairs to the frame, but it presents very well.
