Personal Presentation Royal Vienna Beer Stein of Tony Faust from Columbian World Exposition of 1893

$2,999.00

An extremely fine porcelain presentation Royal Vienna type hand-painted German or Austrian Beer Stein presented to Anthony Edward (Tony) Faust, of St. Louis, MO.  The stein itself has a wonderful raspberry color with raised gold details and a hand-painted image of a successful hunter with his deer visiting with a couple; the man holding an extremely long pipe and the woman sitting and listening to his hunting story.  The top of the lid is hand-painted and signed by the artist "Knoeller" depicting the bust of a beautiful maiden.  The thumb lift is shaped like a crown as typical of the style.

What makes this particular stein so special is the hand-painted inscription on the inside of the lid, which translates "(To) Mr. A. E. Faust in St. Louis as a pleasant memory of the Columbian World Exhibition 1893, given (by) Rich Horstmann in (٪) Berlin".  Tony Faust was born in Germany in 1836 and arrived in St. Louis, MO at age 17 as a plasterer. He opened a small tavern in 1862 and nine years later moved it to the corner of Broadway and Elm as a full service restaurant called "Faust's Oyster House."  The restaurant became the most famous in St. Louis and was compared to Delmonico's Steak House in New York, even called the Delmonico's of the West.  He also owned and operated Fulton's Market directly across the street from the restaurant.

Tony Faust was very close friends with Adolphus Busch, of Anheuser-Busch brewery fame, which brewed Faust's Beer for the restaurant and also sold to the public.  Adolphus Busch was known to eat lunch at Faust's nearly every day.  Tony's son, Edward married the daughter of Adolphus Busch and later became a Vice President at Anheuser-Busch.  There is a wealth of information available on Tony Faust as he and his family are the subject of a scholarly book by Elizabeth Terry entitled "Oysters to Angus" "Three Generations of the St. Louis Faust Family."  Tony Faust died in Germany in a carriage accident and was later buried in St. Louis, MO in Bellfontaine Cemetery. His grandson, Leceisester Faust owned and ran a large farm in Chesterfield, Missouri which was later donated to St. Louis County for a park, and now called Faust Park.

This Royal Vienna type stein has the mark on the bottom, sometimes referred to as the 'beehive mark', but which is actually a shield taken from the Hapsburg family crest. The inscription inside this stein indicates that it was a gift to remember the Columbian World Exhibition of 1893, which was held in Chicago and was presented by Richard Horstmann in Berlin.

There is some information available on Richard Horstmann.  'Richard Horstmann.' In 1878 was awarded a patent for improved furniture casters. In  the 1880 edition of Kelly's Directory of the Leather Trades, he is listed as being at Wilhelmstraße 144a in Berlin. He's listed in 'The City Record' of 1886 (for what is unclear without further research). He was listed as a representative (i.e.agent) in Berlin to several German companies at the 1893 World Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. He was located at Oranienstraße 101/102, and in Chicago. He placed an advert in 'The Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review, Volume 27, 1893,' claiming to be the largest exporter to the U.S. of wares for jewelers seeking American trade. His offerings included watches, jewelry (including Durrstein), silverware, porcelain (including Royal Berlin), bric-a-brac, objets d'art, and paintings on porcelain (Dresden and others). In 'Clothiers' and Haberdashers' Weekly', Volume 7, 1895, he is listed under as an importer of collars and cuffs.

It is unknown without further research the exact relationship between Tony Faust and Richard Horstmann, but it appears they were good friends.

The beer stein measures approximately 6 3/4" tall to the top of the crown thumb lift and the base measures 3 3/4" in diameter.  The stein is in mint condition with no chips, cracks, or hairlines.  There is also a lithophane in the bottom of the stein, that can be seen when held up to the light depicting a domestic scene with a man and woman.
