Pair of Antique Oil on Panel Paintings by A. Rueff in Matching Gilt Frames Dated 1887

$1,695.00

A lovely detailed pair of military style of oil on beveled panel paintings signed A. Rueff and dated 1887. These works appear to be after Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier and inscribed in the lower right of each panel. Meissonier was one of the most popular and successful French artists of the 19th Century prior to the rise in impressionism. He painted finely detailed portraits of military subjects down to the smallest detail. This seem to be honorary and faithful reproductions of Meissonier’s works. It is unusual to find a pair of paintings like this by the same artist, signed and dated and in matching gilt frames. Both frames have had some restoration performed on them in the past as they are clearly very old, but present well and look nice hung together as a pair.

One of the paintings depicts a halberdier and the other depicts a cavalier in the time of King Louis XIII. The original of the second work is housed at The Wallace Collection in London. The whereabouts of the original Halberdier painting is unknown.

The site area of each painting measures 15” x 8” and the overall size including the frames measures approximately 23 3/4” x 16 1/4” x 2.5”.
