Oil Painting on Canvas "A Game of Chess" by Frank Moss Bennett 1920

Sale Price:$3,196.00 Original Price:$3,995.00

This is a beautiful oil on canvas painting depicting two 17th Century gentlemen playing a game of chess in an interior. The two players are elaborately dressed. The player on the left in red seems to be having difficulty with his next move. There are red chess pieces both on the floor by the other player and on the window sill, many more pieces than the few white pieces which seems to point that the figure in white or silver seems to be winning the game. They sit in front of a large leaded glass window with stained glass rondels through which the viewer can see another large house. A bronze sculpture sits on the window sill between the players. The painting depicts the thought process and struggle between the two players during this difficult game. The painting is signed and dated F M Bennett 1920.

The painting measures 19.5” x 13.5” and overall with the gilt frame measures 28” x 22”. The painting is in very good overall condition with some minor in-painting near the edges of the frame due to frame rubbing. The antique frame has had a number of repairs but looks very good on the painting, and repairs are not evident unless examined closely. Provenance: Bonham’s San Francisco May 19, 2013, Lot 4002, $4,750.
