This painting is by Frank Moss Bennett, and it is an oil on canvas “sketch” signed and dated 1938.  The painting depicts Queen Elizabeth I on the throne inspecting a model of the Golden Hind, which is the ship belonging to Sir Francis Drake.  Queen Elizabeth sponsored Drake’s voyage to the Indies to get spices and the trip was so successful that she was able to pay off the national debt of England with the proceeds. On the wall adjacent to her is a portrait of her father, King Henry VIII. Although the painting is considered a “sketch” this one is really well done.  I paid quite a bit for this since it has so many characters and the beautiful light coming in through the windows.  I also had it professionally restored, as someone had painted linseed oil over the surface and it was all yellowed when I got it, but it is now amazing. The difference was tremendous.

The image measures 14.5” x 20.5” and the overall size including the frame is about 20” x 26”. Overall very good condition.
