This is an antique oil painting on canvas, likely of English origin, depicting knights or soldiers on horseback stopping to assist a woman on the side of the road. The painting is housed in a gilt wood and gesso frame, which appears original to the work. It is unsigned, but clearly from age, appears to be 19th Century, likely circa 1890.

The painting had been very loose on the stretcher and the frame had some damage as well, and both have been professionally repaired by a gallery, relined onto a new canvas and re-stretched, and the surface has been cleaned. The frame has also been professionally repaired.

The dimensions of the site area of the artwork are approximately 33 3/4” x 24” and the outer dimensions of the antique frame are 40 1/2” x 30 3/4”.
