Antique Mettlach 2.1L German Beer Stein "Lovers" 1896

Sale Price:$450.00 Original Price:$499.99

A beautiful antique 2.1L German beer stein made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach, Germany, mold #1734, marked and dated 1896 and signed by Christian Warth, the designer of the stein. This stein is etched and incised and depicts a romantic scene with a pair of lovers in Renaissance style clothing. The man stands proud, holding a goblet up in the air in toast and holding his sweetheart's hand. The side panels are filled with scrolling foliage and it has a flared jewel-form base and ceramic inlay lid.

The stein is in beautiful condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or pewter damage, only the natural tarnish on the pewter this is expected and desired by antique stein collectors. The V&B base mark has the date code for the year 1896, so this stein is 126 years old! The stein is listed in the Mettlach Book by Gary Kirsner with a value of $1,000-$1,300. As prices have fallen since the book was published, it is being offered at a fair price for today's market.
