A miniature oil on panel painting by French artist, Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel (1839-1929) depicting a mandolin player in 17th Century clothing seated at a table draped in a velvet tablecloth with his music and a gilt silver standing cup and pewter tankard. The painting is extremely detailed for its small size. The man wears a brocade coat with pink she and large black hat with a light colored rim. He appears to be in great concentration with his music as we, the viewer, can almost hear the notes as he plays. The painting is signed A. A. Lesrel and dated 1895 lower left.

The painting measures 6” x 4” and is presented in an elaborate gilt frame with artist nameplate. The framed dimensions are 14 5/8” x 13 1/8”. The frame has had some previous repairs but presents well. The painting has been professionally cleaned and varnished and looks wonderful, ready to hang. The artist’s paintings sell for considerable amounts with his record high being $248,000 in the year 2000 at Christies New York.

From 1861, Adolphe-Alexandre Lesrel (1839-1929) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the studio of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme and later with Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier.  During his entire creative life, he painted in the academic style and favored genre and historical scenes.  Since 1865, he exhibited regularly at the Société des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.  Lesrel’s paintings were already very popular during his lifetime and still achieve top prices at auctions worldwide.
