Jan Baptiste Lambrechts, Oil on Canvas, A Meal in a Tavern

$7,500.00

An oil on canvas painting by Flemish artist, Jan Baptiste Lambrechts (1680-1731) depicting a group of merry-makers enjoying a meal in a tavern. The man on the left holding a stoneware jug in his right hand, his hat resting on the floor. He sits next to a woman and another couple, posing for us as if looking directly at us. There are two more people standing behind the table, and another group in the back right of the painting. A cabinet with plates is behind the group on the left.

The painting is unsigned, but is listed in the database of the RKD (Netherlandish Institute for Art Research) as by Jan Baptiste Lambrechts under the following link: https://rkd.nl/images/58497.

The canvas is lined and there appears to be some pest damage on the back of the lining canvas. There is old writing on the back of the canvas that reads “Molenaer pine”. The name Molenaer refers to Jan Miense Molenaer, a famous Dutch artist. The inscription could simply be an error, or Lambrechts may have painted the image after a lost original by Molenaer. The painting is presented in a ebonized contemporary reproduction Dutch style ripple frame, custom made for this painting. The painting measures 15 5/8” x 19 1/2” and the overall size including the frame measures approximately 24” x 27 1/2”. There is considerable craquelure in the image, and some in-filling in the upper left quadrant, along with other old touch-up.
