Oil Painting on Artist Board of 17th Century English Soldier

$995.00

This is a lovely painting of an English Cromwellian Soldier of the 17th Century depicted standing in a landscape wearing breastplate armor, a helmet and red cape, and holding a halberd. The painting is signed “S Grossberg” and dated 1925, and is housed in a period gorgeous bird’s eye maple frame with gilt fillet.

The painting was originally framed under glass, as some antique paintings are, which has maintained the coloring of the work. The back of the artist board has a mark “Made in Canada”, which may be the country of origin for the painting. It appears that the board may have been cut down slightly to fit into the frame. The last two digits of the year are obscured by the fillet, but on removal can be seen as in the photograph, as 1925. There is some damage to one corner of the frame that has been filled, and is mostly not noticeable. There is some wear to the corners of the board, which are completely invisible inside the frame. The site area of the painting measures 29 1/2” x 21 3/8” and the overall painting with the frame measures 38 3/4” x 30 1/2”.
