Nineteenth Century Belarusian Icon of St. George Slaying the Dragon

$895.00

This is a great 19th Century Belarusian icon depicting St. George slaying the dragon painted on a wooden panel.

St. George is depicted with a halo around his head, wearing an armor breastplate with green outfit and red cape on his rearing white stallion, holding a spear with a cross at the apex and with the spear’s tip in the dragon’s mouth and through the side of it’s jaw, with blood dripping down. A female saint, also with halo stands nearby watching.

The overall wooden panel measures approximately 14 1/2” x 17 1/2” and the image itself within the panel measures approximately 11 3/4” x 14 3/4”. The brushstrokes are quite apparent in the work and there seems to be a heavy layer of dirt embedded, which gives character to the piece. The back of the panel has two batons, which are meant to stabilize the panel and keep it from warping.
