A charming oil on canvas painting by English artist Charles Dallieres, depicting an English Civil War soldier, likely a supporter of Oliver Cromwell, gallantly standing, looking to his right, wearing a helmet and cuirass or breast plate, with one hand on his hip and one hand holding his sword. The artist skillfully paints the figure in full stance in a relatively bare room, but casting the figure’s shadow on the floor, down toward his signature in the lower right corner of the painting.

The painting has been professionally cleaned and restored, and the antique frame has also had some professional restoration, with an added fillet to better fit the frame. The age of this piece can clearly be seen in the last photo, showing the back of the wooden frame and stretcher and the dark coloring of the canvas. It is unlined. The image measures 11 1/2” x 8 3/8” and the overall size including the frame measures 17 1/8” 14”.
