Giorgio Giacoboni (1716-1762) Oil on Canvas, Woman at her Mortar with Dog

$2,495.00

An eighteenth Century old master painting by Giorgio Giacoboni (1716-1762) depicting a woman with a large wooden pestle and stone or marble mortar, likely grinding grain. A small black and white dog watches the action from the lower center and a chicken seems to be looking for pieces on the floor on the lower left. A window in the upper right brings in light. The mortar is mounted on a stone slab on top of a red brick wall or counter.

Giacaboni’s work seldom comes up for auction, and seems to be quite scarce. He depicts his subjects in every day tasks typically in interior scenes. The artist’s record sale was $10,400 for a painting in 2013.

The image measures 14 1/4” x 9” and the overall size including the frame measures approximately 16” x 11.25”. Condition: Appears to have new tacking edges but not relined. Image is somewhat dark and exhibits craquelure as would be expected from age. Frame is contemporary but nicely done to complement the painting. The painting is from the estate of Anthony Maiullo per the sticker on the back.
