An unusual late Gothic oak 17th Century Austrian hand-carved coffer on stand. The face of the coffer depicts a double colonnade with gothic radius arches in low relief with floral elements and scrolling geometric shapes. The construction features mortise and tenon joinery, forged iron handles and iron strap hinges. The chest includes the original key and lock which has three sets of locking U-shaped rings. The original iron key has a cross shaped cut-out and turns the locking mechanism which automatically locks when the lid is closed. It appears that there are some later elements incorporated into the coffer. The coffer is attributed as 17th Century based on the construction, wood age, patina and ware, iron elements, etc., but this could possibly be 18th Century.

The coffer sits on a stand which appears to be of later construction, likely 19th Century with some older elements. The columns appear to match the chest and have old age cracks. It appears that some later work has been done on this chest including replacement of the iron hinges, as one can see the where the longer hinges were attached on the back of the chest. There is also an old replacement screw on the lock and replacement nut on the back of one of the hinges. The finish of the coffer is amazing with a great patina and raised grain from wear and use. There are also a number of age related cracks in the lid and body of the coffer. Within the interior is a small compartment with lid, and this appears to be a later replacement. The coffer sits loosely on the stand, and could be separated completely and would still be fully functional, but is attractive, in its raised position mounted on the stand. The dimensions are approximately 42 1/2" wide x 19" high x 19 1/2" deep and the approximate dimensions of the stand are 43" wide x 19 1/2" deep x 12 1/2" high.
