Antique German Schwarzlot Uranium Glass Vase with Hunters and Poems

$995.00

A rare and unique German Schwarzlot uranium glass vase with hunters and poems attributed to Fritz Heckert and with attributed design to Adolf Heydn. The vase features a Jäger on one panel and a Wendmann on another, with alternate panels which include the first line of a poem in German about each of these types of hunters. Schwarzlot translates to “black lead” and means that various shades of black paint is used to replicate the image of a German Woodcut print. Both images are from 16th Century German woodcuts (see last photo) which is the source for the design. The style of the glass appears to be that of Fritz Heckert, whose factory made glass in the Historismus style, and this design appears to by by Adolf Heydn who designed to similar vases with other figures on them, and also made of uranium glass.

Uranium glass is very unusual to be used in German Historismus glassware, and this is the first example that I have ever seen. In fact most uranium glass is plain with no enameling or design at all.

The vase measures 4 3/4” in height, so quite small, but well designed, well-painted and very beautiful.
