Antique Framed German Ceramic Plaque "The Trumpeter of Säckengen" with City of Munich in Background

$379.00

A lovely antique framed ceramic relief plaque painted in tones of brown and olive with gold highlights depict the famous Trumpeter of Säckengen, blowing his trumpet with the city of Munich and the Frauenkirche Towers in the background. The character is based on a poem by Victor von Scheffel published in 1854 about a trumpeter who fell in love with a young maiden. The theme appears on many German beer steins and is one of the great German romantic stories. The plaque is framed with a gilt fillet, velvet liner and gilt shadow-box frame. This is likely a souvenir piece from the city of Munich, likely early 20th Century. the plaque itself measures 10 3/8” x 6 7/8” and the overall size of the frame measures 17 3/4” x 14 1/4” and is approximately 2 1/4” thick. It is framed behind glass, although the glass could easily be removed.
