Frank Moss Bennett, Oil on Canvas, "There's Plenty Time to Win this Game and Thrash the Spaniards Too"

$8,500.00

An oil on canvas painting by British artist Frank Moss Bennett (1874-1952) titled “There’s Plenty of Time to Win this Game and Thrash the Spaniards Too!’ The painting is a lively and highly characteristic historical genre scene by the artist, signed and dated 1944. The composition presents a theatrical gathering of richly dressed seventeenth-century figures engaged in a game on the coast, while ships and martial activity animate the distance beyond. Bennett’s talent for narrative is especially evident here: the painting combines costume, conversations, sport, pageantry, and with into a single carefully staged scene. The subject is full of movement and detail, from the elegantly dressed players in the foreground to the assembled spectators, soldiers, horses, vessels offshore and even the spirited vignette at the far right. The result is a work of strong decorative impact and unmistakable storytelling charm.

The painting measures 24 1/4” x 36 1/4” and with the gilt frame measures 29” x 41”. Both the painting and frame are in very good condition.

Frank Moss Bennett was a British painter of historical and costume subjects. Born in Liverpool in 1874, he studied at Clifton College, the Slade School of Fine Art, St. John’s Wood Art School, and the Royal Academy Schools, where he won a gold medal and traveling scholarship. He became especially well known for his meticulously staged scenes of earlier centuries, often featuring cavaliers, elegant interiors, collectors, connoisseurs, and episodes of polite society rendered with a strong sense of drama and character. His paintings were exhibited widely, and he showed at major venues including the Royal Academy in London.
