One of the most ambitious compositions ever produced by Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel, Les Mousquetaires du Roi captures a sumptuous royal gathering at the heart of a 17th Century castle interior. A triumph of detail, theatricality, and historicism, this monumental canvas stages a moment of exuberant celebration as costumed musketeers, musicians, courtiers, and soldiers animate a richly decorated great hall.

Lesrel’s talent for narrative is in full command here: a trumpet player serenades a richly dressed noblewoman, musicians in vibrant uniforms keep time, and a group of officers lean over a green-draped table to gamble at dice. In the shadows, a mounted suit of armor stands guard beneath a canopy of banners, lances, and heraldic shields. Through the gothic arches at right, a soldier stands beside a large wheeled cannon, its barrel visible just beyond the stone balcony, with a castle visible in the distance. This glimpse of martial preparedness contrasts with the interior revelry. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left “A. A. LESREL 1885.”

This painting is a rare example of Lesrel’s large-format historical tableaux, which are dramatically less common than his more frequently encountered small and medium-sized easel works. The composition exemplifies Lesrel’s fascination with early modern ceremonial pageantry, capturing both grandeur and intimacy in equal measure.

About the Artist: Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel (French, 1839-1929) was a leading figure of the French academic genre painting tradition, best known for his intricately detailed depictions of 17th and 18th Century costume scenes. He studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier, whose influence is evident in Lesrel’s jewel-like surface precision and narrative intensity. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and achieved commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic. His paintings are held in numerous private collections and institutions internationally.

Market Rarity and Value: Lesrel’s large format paintings, especially those over 4 feet in either dimension, appear infrequently at auction. Most works by the artist measure under 30 inches in either dimension and contain far fewer figures. This example at nearly 48 inches wide and over 34 inches tall presents one of the artist’s most ambitious narrative compositions, with over two dozen characters rendered in exquisite detail. Paintings of this scale and visual complexity are markedly rare in the artists oeuvre. Over the past decade, at least four comparable large-scale works have sold at major international auction houses for between $90,000 and $155,000, underscoring the rarity and collectability of examples of this scale and ambition.

Condition and Framing: This painting is in very good condition, with a clean and stable surface, rich original coloration, and fine brushwork preserved througout There is faint, stabilized craquelure consistent with age. The painting measures 34 5/8” x 47 9/16” (nearly 3’ high x 4’ wide) and with the amazing gilt frame measures 47” x 59” (nearly 4’ high x 5’ wide). The frame itself is approximately 6 1/2” wide and 6” deep. This is an extremely heavy frame and must be reinforced when hanging. The painting and frame are in very good condition. The painting has some craquelure, which is typical with age. The outside corners of the frame have had some losses and minor repair. The painting is ready to hang.

A superb Victorian electrotype shield by the celebrated Birmingham firm Elkington & Co., after the renowned French sculptor Léonard Morel-Ladeuil. This appears to be patinated copper with a bronze patina. Designed by the celebrated French sculptor Léonard Morel-Ladeuil and signed “Morel-Ladeuil Fecit 1866,” the original Milton Shield was created for Elkington & Co. and exhibited at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where it attracted international acclaim and contributed to Elkington’s award of the Grand Prize for artistic metalwork and electrotype production. The present example is an authentic nineteenth-century Elkington electrotype produced from that celebrated model under the auspices of the Department of Science & Art.

The images represent Milton’s Paradise Lost. The central high-relief medallion depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden receiving the Archangel Raphael, telling them about the war in heaven between God and Satan. At the top center of the shield is an image representing God. Below center is the image of the Archangel Michael casting Satan into hell. The panel on the left depicts the angels in heaven and the panel on the right the lost souls in hell. This example is signed “Morel-Ladeuil Fecit 1866” on the lower left and “Elkington & Co.” on the lower right. This example retains its original ebonized wooden frame with a folding display easel, making it equally suitbale for tabletop or wall display. An old collector’s label remains on the reverse of the easel. On the reverse is a Royal seal which reads “Department of Science and Art, Elkington V&R.”

Elkington’s electrotypes are recognized as masterpieces of Victorian metalwork, and examples are held in major museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Condition: Very good antique condition with an attractive aged patina. Minor age-related wear to the wooden frame consistent with its age. The easel stand is sturdy and fully functional. The dimensions of the sight area of the shield are 33.75” x 25.75” and with wooden frame measures approximately 38.75” x 31.75”.

This large Gothic Revival carved oak cabinet with leaf and vine motif would serve as a wonderful statement piece for just about any room in your house. The carving on the cabinet is magnificent. The top portion of the cabinet features opposing doors with sliding iron locks and a key lock with a central smaller door with key lock. Each of these doors is carved in vine and leaf motif with letters or symbols and features iron strap hinges.. Each top corner is carved with a figural scholar or gentleman. This may have possibly been a wedding chest or cabinet with the bride and groom’s initials on either opposing door. The central stiles on either side of the central door features a carved swan at the top. The two large bottom doors are carved with floral motif and linenfold central panels. The sides of the cabinet are also carved with linenfold panels. There is a great dark patina on the cabinet. The top section sits on top of the bottom portion of the chest, which makes this much easier to move or rearrange.

There is a small chip in the wood on the bottom of the stile to the right of the central door (See 3rd photo). The locks appear to be somewhat newer but still uses an old skeleton key, which is present. Each of the three top compartments have side braces for shelves, but the shelves are no longer present. The bottom of the cabinet appears to have had some work done on the inside. The back is a replacement as well as the left and central upright and the single shelf on the left side. As the outside is what shows, that is period and the most important portion. This would make a great cabinet for storing board games or blankets, or just as general storage. If you are a carpenter or are handy, the inside shelving could be easily reconfigured. The dimensions of the cabinet are 66” High, 55 1/2” Wide and 19 1/2” Deep.

An oil on canvas painting by French artist Eugene Gabriel Louis Isabey (1803-1886) depicting a castle siege from the sea in the time of the 17th Century. Various soldiers are charging up the hillside toward the castle which appears to be in flames with smoke coming from the top of the left turret. Boats are seen in the water with more troops closing in and charging the castle. Two trumpeters stand near the top of the wall playing the charge as another climbs up the large boulder to join them.

The painting measures 18" x 28" and overall with the gilt frame measures 27" x 37". The painting and frame are in overall very good condition and ready to hang.

Eugène Isabey  
b. 1803 Paris, France, d. 1886 Lagny, France, draftsman; painter, French

After spending his formative years in the Louvre Museum amidst the most accomplished artists of the day, Eugène Isabey initially painted mostly landscapes in watercolor. In 1820 he began to travel, first to Normandy and then to Britain, where he discovered a freer watercolor technique. On several occasions he returned to Normandy, painting seascapes and landscapes that helped to solidify his reputation as one of the leading proponents of Romantic views, both dramatic and placid.

Isabey also made drawings of other scenic areas of France to illustrate travel volumes and dashed off many landscape drawings and watercolors throughout his life. As the official artist accompanying the French expedition to Algiers in 1830, Isabey illustrated the account of the expedition. Disillusioned when these drawings and oil studies failed to sell on his return, he chose another subject area.

His success with an anecdotal genre painting at the 1831 Salon led him to a new specialty in historicizing genre painting. Isabey's skill with elegant court dress and elaborately re-created ceremonies of earlier centuries, in turn, led to an appointment as one of Louis-Philippe's court painters. In his later years, he painted brightly colored scenes of violence, massacres, duels, and looting.

This commanding 19th Century majolica sculpture produced by Wilhelm Schiller & Söhne in Bohemia, exemplifies the peak of Orientalist aesthetics in European decorative arts. The figure represents a sylized Middle Eastern warrior, resplendent in detailed armor and richly colored textiles, resting one hand on a loyal lion companion - a powerful symbol of sovereignty, courage adn exotic nobility.

Executed in a sophisticated combination of gloss-glazed and matte-painted finishes, this piece showcases Schiller’s technical mastery and artisic ambition. The surface treatment allows for a striking contrast between matallic armor, soft textiles and the lion’s sculpted mane, creating a sense of realism and dramatic prescence. The warrior holds a polychrome shield and wears a gilded helmet adorned with vibrant enamel accents. He stands atop a modeled rocky base that has been vivdly glazed in tones of green, yellow and ochre.

Marked underside with the impressed WS&S factory stamp and mold number 6326, this rare figure is an original production from the renowned Bohemian manfactory’s late 19th Century output. Wilhelm Schiller & Söhne was celebrated for its monumental majolica sculptures, often exhibited at international expositions and favored by collectors of Orientalist and historicst decorative arts.

This model is rarely - if ever - seen on the market. Its size, subject matter, and condition eleveate it to museum or advanced prviate collection status. An exceptional example of Conenental ceramic suclpture from the Orientalist movement.

The sculpture likely dates 1880-1895, measures an impressive 19” (48.3cm) tall and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs detected.

Josef Wagner-Höhenberg (German 1870-1939), A Careful Wager - Oil on Canvas

This finely detailed 19th or early 20th Century oil on canvas by Josef Wagner-Höhenberg (1870-1939), titled A Careful Wager, captures a quintessential Bavarian tavern scene alive with wit, tension and camaraderie. Four men gather around a rustic wooden table, their expressions revealing the psychological drama of a high-stakes card game. On the left, a man in a blue coat and felt hat studies his Wüttemberg pattern Binokel cards - a traditional Swabian game beloved in southern Germany. Beside him, a bearded gentleman in a green vest and feathered Tyrolean hat leans back with quiet confidence, a cigar clamped between his teeth as though holding a winning hand. Opposite them, a more somber figure dressed in black with a skullcap, perhaps a monk, sits more pensively, tapping a finger against his lips, weighing his next move. The entire composition resonates with the charm of rural Swabian tradition, offering not only a masterful painting, but also a nostalgic glimpse into cultural history treasured by many of German heritage. The painting is signed lower right in red “Wagner-Höhenberg”.

The painting is an oil on canvas measuring 27.5” x 39.5” and overall with the elaborate gilt frame measures 39.5” x 51.5”. The painting has been professionally cleaned with a small tear repaired by Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration, September 2025. The frame has also had numerous repairs to missing elements, but looks very good and ready to hang.

Josef Wagner-Höhenberg was a master of Bavarian and Tyrolean genre scenes, celebrated for his skill in depicting the everyday rituals of village life. His works, infused with humor and authenticity, preserve the social traditions of 19th Century southern Germany.

True of Wagner’s signature style, the composition evokes the Dutch Golden Age with its warm palette, historic costuming, and careful attention to light and texture. One figure strums a lute while others enjoy drink, conversation and tobacco in a richly appointed room complete with leaded windows, Delft tiles and period furnishings.

The painting is in excellent condition with some fine craquelure. The gilt frame is also in excellent condition and ready to hang. The painting measures 27 3/4” x 33 1/2” and with frame the overall dimensions are 37 1/2” x 44 1/2” x 3 1/2”.

A large and very fine Norweigan Karelian Birch Imperial Tankard from the middle part of the 18th Century. The tankard is carved from Karelian Birch, which has a mottled appearance and is sometimes referred to as burl wood or burled wood tankard. It features a high domed lid with a carved rampant lion, a lion thumb lift and is raised on three figural lion form feet. The outside of the tankard, which is typically smooth in most examples is carved with a crown in the center surrounded by garland swags. All parts of the tankard are carved from wood, even the hinge, which has a floral medallion carved on either end. The capacity is approximately 2L. The tankard is over 250 years old.

Many of these tankards were used for weddings and other ceremonies, but this one is unusual with the carving of the crown on the front of the tankard. The patina is also fantastic. The tankard measures approximately 11” tall to the top of the thumb lift and the body is approximately 7” in diameter with the handle side having a width of approximately 9”.

The condition is excellent. However, there is an old repair at the bottom of the handle attachment with what appears to be a pewter plate. The tankard is sturdy and extremely attractive. Provenance - Twyssenden Manor, Goudhurst, Kent, England

A beautiful panoramic view of Chislehurst Common in England with a windmill, cottages and a few travelers beneath an expansive sky by English artist, Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876). The painting has a bright, beautiful sky and clouds that simply draws the viewer into the painting. The artist signature is lower right corner and also names the location.

The painting measures 24” x 42” and overall with the gilt frame, measures approximately 28” x 46 1/2”. The painting is in very good condition and has some signs of previous restoration. The frame appears to be in its original condition with no sign of damage or repair. The old labels on the back of the painting list the artist as “Niemann Jnr” which may indicate the painting may be by his son, Edward H. Niemann. However, the signature and the painting look more like Edmund John Niemann, but it is likely not possible to determine with certainty.

A 19th Century oil on canvas painting by English artist, Edgar Bundy (1862-1922) depicting a group of three cavaliers, gathered around an Elizabethan style baluster leg table before an Elizabethan style court cupboard discussing or formulating a plan. The central figure is leaning forward over the table with his hands on the table, looking at the other two gentlemen. He wears a red outfit with slashed sleeves, a blue cache and high top leather boots with a cup hilt rapier strapped around his waste. The other two figures on the left, one sitting at the table and one standing with his elbow on the back of a chair look on with hands on their chins in contemplation of what is being discussed. A bright red Renaissance style velvet cushioned chair sits at the front left of the painting. The artist’s signature is in the lower right.

The painting measures approximately 21.75” x 31.5” and with the gilt frame measures overall approximately 29” x 38 1/2”. It is in very good overall condition with some minor stretcher marks see on the surface, but is not distracting. The frame has had some minor repairs but looks very good. The artist name is painted on the lower center of the frame.

This commanding oil on panel by French academic painter Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920), dated 1875, presents a richly detailed, full-length portrait of a 17th Century musketeer. The figure stands confidently, his left hand resting on a flintlock musket while his gaze engages the viewer directly. He wears a broad-brimmed hat, a white edged ruff, and a fitted leather jerkin over a shimmering green silk shirt - his attire evoking the martial elegance of the early Baroque era. His black breeches are tucked into tall, soft leather riding boots equipped with spurs. Roybet’s masterful technique is evident in the confident brushwork, finely observed costume textures and dramatic chiaroscuro lighting. His interest in historical themes and richly costumed portraiture aligns him with artists such as Ernest Meissonnier, though Roybet brought a particularly romantic flair to his solitary figures.

Ferdinand Roybet was among the most celebrated genre painters of the late 19th Century in France. A frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon, he was renowned for his historical character portraits, often depicting cavaliers, musketeers, and 17th Century nobility in luxuriant fabrics and nostalgic poses. His works are held in numerous public collections including the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.

The panel measures 24” x 18” and overall with the period gilt frame measures 32 3/4” x 26 7/8”. The painting is in very good condition with crisp details and rich coloration. There is minor frame rubbing visible at the left and right panel edges consistent with age and handling. The panel is structurally stable with no apparent warping or delimitation. The painting is signed F. Roybet 1875 in the lower left corner. The painting is presented in an ornate 19th Century gilt wood frame with high-relief foliate carving and punch work texture. Minor wear, including areas of surface loss and small separations int he gees, is consistent with the frame’s age and complements the antique character of the work.

A large landscape painting by English artist, Edward H. Niemann, the son of famous artist Edmund John Nieman (1800-1876). Edward continued in his father’s footsteps as an artist painting large and small landscape paintings depicting the English countryside. He often painted with perspective showing a road or river meandering diagonally through the landscape, and he often painted large boulders or rocks in his works. In this work, the artist used a rich impasto or layers of thick paint to depict the boulders, providing a true texture to the work.

The painting measures 30” x 50” and with the gilt frame overall measures 36” x 56”. There is some in-painting throughout the sky, but the majority of the river and rock landscape does not show any in-painting under UV light. The date below the artist signature appears to possibly have been altered in the third digit, which seems to read 1889. It is possible that someone thought the painting to be by the artist’s father, who passed in 1876, and adjusted the date to fit his lifetime, but now appears to show 1889, which would fit the timeline of the son. The frame has had some small pieces re-cast and re-painted to match the frame, but presents well overall.

A large oil on canvas painting by English artist, Frank Moss Bennett (1874-1953) depicting a cavalier or swashbuckler in a green coat with slashed sleeves, lace collar, and large hat with feather. The man looks directly at the viewer with a confident pose holding a walking stick and with his hand on his hip adjacent to his sword. The painting is signed and dated 1909 in the lower left corner. Most of Bennett’s paintings are much smaller than this, and later with the bulk of his work in the 1920’s and after. This is one of the earliest signed Frank Moss Bennett paintings.

A Watercolor and gouache painting by English artist, Charles Cattermole (1832-1900), entitled “Volunteers in the time of Charles I”. The painting is a true tour de force with a large number of individuals depicted in great detail. The central figure is a soldier in armor mounted on a white horse, apparently looking for volunteers to join the army in service of the King (Charles I). The townsfolk gather round listening to the soldiers. A young soldier kisses his sweetheart as he says goodbye. An older soldier kisses his baby as his wife stands with him. Another soldier takes a drink from a tankard while a woman holds the jug to replenish it. Older men sit at a table watching with a glass. About the artist: Charles Cattermole was part of the wave of Victorian artists who were interested in reconstituting the Britain of the past in their pictures, combining an imaginative and lively vision of history with an antiquarian attention to period detail in such matters as costume, accessories and setting.

This reappraisal of history painting had been gaining momentum in England since about 1830, and was prompted in large measure by the huge impact of Sir Walter Scott’s historical novels. Painters also tended now to favour scenes inspired by minor, and very often domestic, dramas instead of the more conventional heroic episodes of bygone ages.

Cattermole was heavily influenced by his uncle, George Cattermole, a successful watercolourist and illustrator of Walter Scott, who specialised in historical genre. Despite the narrow focus of his art, Cattermole’s brush encompassed various distant eras in British history, his subjects ranging from the monastic and military life of the Middle Ages to swashbuckling incidents from the Civil War. His antiquarian bent enabled him to recreate the backdrop of historical anecdote with accuracy and fidelity, and his watercolours are perhaps most alluring when they illustrate scenes of wild chase, battles, duels and sieges.

Cattermole showed his work at venues including the Society of British Artists*, the British Institution, the Royal Academy of London* and the Society of Painters in Water Colours*, of which he became an associate in 1863 and a full member in 1870. When he first exhibited with the Society in 1864, The Art Journal said ‘he possesses qualities which will, before many years, win for him honour and reward… action, character, and composition, excellencies wherein this artist bids to be preeminent.’

Reviewing the Society’s 1869 winter exhibition in The Morning Post on 6 January, the art critic commended the ‘vigour’ and ‘refinement’ of Cattermole’s style: ‘The delicacy of colour and the neatness of touch by which his present drawings are so strikingly distinguished have not been purchased… at the cost of the still more precious qualities of dramatic action and characteristic expression.

The works he now exhibits are, for the most part, interiors of churches, castles and baronial halls, which are in each case the scenes of stories so diversified in sentiment, incident, and character as to possess all the requisite freshness and variety of interest. In the uniform skill with which he treats a number of dissimilar subjects there is conclusive evidence not only of the artist’s versatility of fancy but of a still rarer gift – his capacity to adapt his manner to his theme.”

The painting measures 24” x 35” and overall with liner and gilt frame measures 35” x 46 1/2”. The painting has had a small tear to each of the four corners that has been professionally conserved by a paper conservator. The frame has also had significant damage and restoration with re-painting. The glazing is new museum grade glass. Ready to hang.

An oil on artist board painting by American artist, Arthur William Woelfle (1873-1936), depicting a cavalier type gentleman with a large mustache in a red coat and wide-brimmed hat. The artist is quite well known and has a good auction sales history. His paintings range from sailboat harbor scenes, to still life paintings, portraits and nudes. He seems to have been quite versatile. This painting is done in the impressionist stile with broad, bright brushstrokes and impasto. There are old gallery tags on the back of the painting including a price of $100 from a gallery. My art restorer commented when he saw the tag “at that time, you could almost buy a car for $100, this artist must have been very highly thought of to ask such an amount for a small painting like this.” Auction records for this artist show the high auction record for his work to be $15,600 in 2016.

The painting is in fine condition, but the frame has had some restorations, specifically on the corner pieces, but looks fine and is ready to hang. The painting measures approximately 9 3/4” x 7 1/2” and overall with the antique frame, measures 16” x 14”.

Arthur William Woelfle    (1873-1936)

A painter, lecturer and instructor, Arthur William Woelfle was born in Trenton, New Jersey on December 17, 1873.  He was one of six children born to Louis and Bertha Nick Woelfle.

Woelfle studied art at the Brooklyn Institute under Professor Boyle where he won a scholarship.  He also studied under Will H. Low and C.Y. Turner at the National Academy of Design in New York and also under Carroll Beckwith and Siddons Mowbray at the Art Students League.  He later studied in Paris and at the Munich Academy where he was awarded an honorable mention in 1897.

The artist seems to have settled for a time in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he exhibited between 1899 and 1905 in the local Art Club's yearly exhibits. He also executed a 125 foot mural for the art gallery at the Public Library.  He then traveled for a number of years, doing murals and portraits in the Youngstown, Ohio area.  By 1914 he held several teaching positions: Essex Falls, New Jersey; Tarrytown, New York; at the Mechanics Institute and the Grand Central School of Art, both in New York City.  In the latter position he taught classes in portrait and figure painting for eight years.

In 1928 the Erie Art Club honored him with a joint exhibit along with George Elmer Browne.  That same year he won the Grant prize from the New Rochelle Art Association.  Further awards came in 1929 with a silver medal and figure prize from the Allied Artists of America; in 1934 with a first place in the New Jersey Annual Art Show at the Montclair Art Museum, and in 1935 with a medal awarded by the National Arts Club of which he was a life member.  He also belonged to the American Federation of Arts.

Early in 1936 Arthur W. Woelfle suffered a nervous breakdown.  He died at his mother's home in Brooklyn on March 6, 1936, at age 62.

A watercolor and gouache painting by Italian artist, Francesco Coleman (1851-1918), depicting an altercation in a dining establishment which is transforming into a duel. The two participants standing ready with swords. The man on the left in blue, gold and white striped silk with ruff stands looking toward his opponent. Only the whites of his eyes are visible, as he appears to be extremely angry. A friend holds his shoulder, attempting to coax him from violence and bring him to his senses. The man on the right, ready to draw his sword in defense, one of his friends reaching for his arm. His chair laying on the floor showing that he jumped up quickly to defend himself. To the left a heavy man holds a piece of paper, possibly the bill for the meal, hoping they will pay and take this outside. In the back a young woman cries and is consoled by an older woman. The painting shows such dynamic action that in the center of the tablecloth, a wine cork is falling in mid-action. The painting is signed by the artist with “Roma” as this would have been painted in Rome.

About the artist: Francesco Coleman (1851–1918) was an Italian painter. He was the son of the English painter Charles Coleman and brother of the better-known Italian painter Enrico Coleman. He was known as a painter, in oil and in water-colour, of the people and landscapes of the Campagna Romana and the Agro Pontino, and of oriental subjects.

Francesco Coleman was born in Rome on 23 July 1851. He was the sixth of eight children of the English painter Charles Coleman, who had come to Rome in 1831 and settled there permanently in 1835, and his wife Fortunata Segadori, a famous artist's model from Subiaco, whom he had married in 1836.

He studied painting in his father's studio, and showed a particular aptitude for water-colours. He shared this studio at via Margutta 33 with his father and brother throughout his life. He ceased all artistic activity after the death of Enrico in 1911.

He died on 9 January 1918 at his home in via Valenziani, near the Porta Salaria. He was buried in the Cimitero del Verano.

About the artist: Isidore Patrois is a painter of genre who became famous throughout his life at the Salon where he started in 1844. It was through historical subjects that Isidore Pantrois revealed himself, notably by presenting episodes from the life of Joan of Arc, François I and Jacques Coeur, for which he received a 3rd class medal at the 1861 Salon.

Louis Énault (1824-1900), a novelist and journalist, said of Patrois that "he always knows how to make the characters who animate his compositions sympathetic [...] One would be happy to live with most of his heroes, and especially his heroines. [...] one wants to see them again when one has seen them; one is not satisfied with finding the interiors he shows us pretty, one wants to live in them".

The painting measures 10 3/4” x 8 1/4” and overall with the Dutch style ripple frame measures 18 1/2” x 16”. The painting has some minor touch up around the edges due to previous frame rubbing. Rare Mettlach Plaque with Original Wood Frame Depicting a Fisherman DEC 138

This rare Villeroy & Boch Mettlach wall plaque is an exceptional example of the factory’s late 19th-early 20th Century print under glaze (PUG) decoration. Measuring 11” x 17” (14” x 20”) overall in its original oak frame and backing), it depicts a fisherman in his skiff retrieving nets and wicker traps - a rustic scene after the French painter Émile Baurau (1851-1930), noted for his landscapes and depictions of rural life.

The lower left bears the printed inscription “n. [nach] E. Barau.” On teh reverse, the plaque carries the DEC 138 decoration number. While no impressed Mettlach mark is present on the ceramic body, the original wood backing retains the green Mercury seal of Villeroy and Boch, firmly confirming authenticity. The intact frame and wood panel suggest the piece has survived in its original presentation.

What makes this plaque especially intriguing is its rarity; DEC 138 does not appear in Gary Kirsner’s The Mettlach Book, Hans Ammelounx’s reprinted catalogues, or in the holdings of the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) - home to the largest public Mettlach collection in North America.

A truly unlisted and uncommon Mettlach plaque, ideal for advanced collectors and admirers of European decorative arts.

Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa, Watercolor painting, Orientalist Palace Guard before a Tapestry

A watercolor and gouache painting on paper by Spanish artist Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa (1854-1938) depicting an Orientalist Palace Guard before a Tapestry. The gentleman in the painting stands guard, holding a partisan in his right hand and with his left hand on his sword. The subject appears to be North-African and wears a wide-brimmed hat and lace collar over his tunic. He has green breeches and a rose colored sash with orange stockings. Behind him is a large Verdure style tapestry with a soldier on a rearing horse. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right quadrant “A Fabres.” It has not been examined out of the frame.

About the artist from Christie’s: Born in Barcelona into a family of artists, Fabrés originally devoted his efforts to the art of sculpture.  After winning a scholarship in 1875 to study in Rome, he was soon impressed by the success of several Spanish artists working in the city and particularly by the painting of Mariano Fortuny.  Like Fortuny, the artist subsequently abandoned his chisel for a brush.  Fabrés was captured by the exoticism of Fortuny’s orientalist subjects and established a style which was to dominate his oeuvre during his twelve year stay in Rome.

In 1892, the artist settled in Paris, where he quickly became part of a circle of Spanish painters who had moved there.  He found great commercial success throughout Europe, thanks to the support of the French dealer Goupil, who presented the artist as the successor of Fortuny.  In 1884 one work was selected for the inaugural exhibition of the Sala Parés.  For Fabrés it meant the triumphant return to his native Barcelona.

While the figures and the costumes of Fabrés’ oriental compositions are based on his knowledge of the paintings of Fortuny, he also drew on elements from other artists who had travelled in North Africa and his knowledge of the interiors of the Alhambra Palace in Granada.  It is highly probable that Fabrés took as a model for the composition the small watercolour by Fortuny depicting a Moroccan executed in 1869 and now in the collections of the Museo del Prado (cfr. Anglés, 1988, pp. 112-113, no. 31).

The painting measures 25” x 17 1/2” and is glazed and framed. Overall with the pierced and carved gilt frame measures 42” x 34”.

An oil on mahogany panel painting by French artist, Hippolyte Francois Leon Duluard (1871-1953) entitled by nameplate “Le Porte-Etendard” or “The Standard Bearer” depicting a cavalier or French Courtier holding a flag. The figure figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, and has curly hair and mustache. HIs green doublet and lace collar are finely depicted with swirls of color, and he wears a pinkish-orange cache. He holds the flag in his left hand over his left shoulder with his right hand on his hip. The painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist and named to the plaque on the gilt frame. There is a beautiful impasto in this painting. This artist’s paintings do not come up very often in auction. His high auction price was $11,290 in 2017 at Bonham’s in London.

The painting measures 16” x 12 1/2” and overall with the gilt frame measures 20 5/8” x 17 1/4”. The painting was professionally cleaned in 2020 by Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago, IL. The frame is in original unrestored fine condition.

An oil on canvas painting by Italian artist, F. Rossi depicting a cavalier drummer examining his music. The painting is nicely detailed with a well dressed young man with mustache and shoulder length hair wearing a hat with red ribbon decoration, a yellow coat, white lawn collar and maroon sleeves. There is further red ribbon decoration from his waist and tied around the top of his stocking. He is bending over and closely examining his music sheet, holding one drumstick over the drum and the other over the music. There are some crumpled sheets of paper on the floor, and behind him is his rapier sword leaning in the corner and an armor breastplate or curiass hanging on the wall.

The painting is monogrammed FR in the lower left hand corner, and the name F. Rossi painted on the liner of the frame. This painting had been behind glass for years, which has preserved the bright colors, but the glass was removed as this is not needed for an oil painting and it allows the viewer to see so much more depth to the painting. There was a small area of in-painting from a professional repair. The frame has been repainted and has a few old repairs, but looks good and ready to hang. The painting image site area is 13 1/2” x 9 1/2” and overall with the frame measures 22 3/8” x 18 1/4”.

An oil on canvas painting by Scottish American artist, William Hart (1823-1894) depicting a Scottish coastal landscape with castle ruins up high on a cliff. This is a small, beautifully painted scene with bright colors and an almost jewel-like tone to the brushstrokes and colors. In the foreground is a small boat on the shore with what appears to be a family. Looking very closely at the scene, it seems to depict a young boy, crouching down on the side of the boat and blowing a pea shooter at another family member sitting at the end of the boat. In this way, the artist inserted a bit of whimsy and color into this beautiful coastal landscape.

The painting is signed in the lower right corner and measures approximately 8 1/4” x 14” and overall with the gilt frame measures 21 3/8” x 15 3/4”. The painting and frame are both in excellent condition. There is one small restored area on the lower right portion of the frame. There is a name inscribed on the back of the stretcher “M.S. Wotherspoon”. The artist was born in Scotland and moved with his parents to the United States when only 6 years old. He became a portrait painter and later a landscape painter and exhibited his first work at the National Academy in 1840. In 1850, at age 27, he returned to Scotland and stayed for 3 years before returning to the United States. This time in Scotland may well be the inspiration for this painting. Upon his return to the United States, Mr. Hart became one of the most well-known Hudson River School artists.

A biography of the artist from Pierce Gallery:

William Hart is a formidable Hudson River School artist who painted portraits, landscapes, allegorical and genre paintings.
He was born in Paisley, Scotland on March 31, 1823, five years before his brother and fellow painter James Hart (1828-1901).  The Harts moved to Albany, New York in 1831.  William apprenticed to a carriage maker, but by the time he was 18 he turned to portrait painting.
In 1840, he began to travel across the country painting landscapes, and by 1845 he had painted in Troy, New York; Richmond, Virginia; and in Michigan, where he spent three years.  After a brief trip to Scotland, he returned to Albany in 1847 and opened a studio in New York City in 1854.
Hart painted Peace and Plenty the following year.  In 1855, he was elected an Associate of the National Academy after having established his reputation as a fine landscape painter with Peace and Plenty.  In 1858, he was elected a Full Member of National Academy of Design in New York City, and in 1865, was a founder and President of the American Water Color Society from 1870 to 1873.
He was a frequent exhibitor in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore and Washington.  His last years were spent in Mt. Vernon, New York, where he died on June 17, 1894.  His work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the National Gallery, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and in many other museums and institutions.

The man on the right holds a cup of dice in his right hand. The group is situated in an interior on a marble floor with an Aubuchon tapestry in the back, with the lady’s hat hanging on the wall. A gentleman’s hat and sword are on the bench in the front. The painting is signed by the artist and titled on a brass nameplate although the years on the nameplate are different than what is listed online for the artist. The painting is beautiful with bright colors and wonderful detail.

The painting measures 19” x 23 1/2” and overall with the heavy gilt frame measures approximately 29 1/2” x 34”. The painting is housed in an ornate giltwood frame with bead course and acanthus leaf decoration

Overall good condition with some light inpainting to restored areas in lower margin and upper-middle. Largest area approximately 1". Canvas is lined. Frame in overall good condition with light wear and cracking consistent with age, some repainting to frame.

19th Century Oil on Canvas Painting by D.M. LePage "Dice Players"

This is a 19th Century oil on canvas painting signed D.M. LePage, Paris depicting a group of soldiers playing dice on the top of a large drum. The painting appears to be after an original engraving by Jean Louis Earnest Meissonier. There are many antique paintings of the same image, but as these are after an engraving, typically the colors are different, and the quality of the paintings are different. This painting has fine detail and is signed by the artist. See the last photo for an image of Meissonier’s actual engraving of the same subject. Five soldiers stand around the game, two players on the right side appear to have some kind of knowing look, while the man on the left looks startled and surprised as to what just happened. Perhaps these men were playing with loaded dice. A pile of armor adorns the floor on the lower left hand corner of the painting. The detail and bright colors of the mens’ outfits really make this painting stand out as does the embellished large wood and gesso picture frame.

The site area of the painting measures 14” x 11” and the overall size with the frame is 22” x 19”. The painting has been professionally cleaned and three small holes patched from verso as can be seen in the second from the last photo. There are areas of cupping and craquelure, which gives the item great age and presence. There is some corner separation on the frame, and small losses and restorations to the gesso frame, but present very well overall.
