This commanding 19th Century majolica sculpture produced by Wilhelm Schiller & Söhne in Bohemia, exemplifies the peak of Orientalist aesthetics in European decorative arts. The figure represents a sylized Middle Eastern warrior, resplendent in detailed armor and richly colored textiles, resting one hand on a loyal lion companion - a powerful symbol of sovereignty, courage adn exotic nobility.
Executed in a sophisticated combination of gloss-glazed and matte-painted finishes, this piece showcases Schiller’s technical mastery and artisic ambition. The surface treatment allows for a striking contrast between matallic armor, soft textiles and the lion’s sculpted mane, creating a sense of realism and dramatic prescence. The warrior holds a polychrome shield and wears a gilded helmet adorned with vibrant enamel accents. He stands atop a modeled rocky base that has been vivdly glazed in tones of green, yellow and ochre.
Marked underside with the impressed WS&S factory stamp and mold number 6326, this rare figure is an original production from the renowned Bohemian manfactory’s late 19th Century output. Wilhelm Schiller & Söhne was celebrated for its monumental majolica sculptures, often exhibited at international expositions and favored by collectors of Orientalist and historicst decorative arts.
