A grand river landscape by British artist, Edmund John Niemann (1813-1877) depicting Richmond Castle on the River Swale. The crenelated castle tower is shown rising above the water with a stone bridge spanning the river in the middle distance. Niemann was known for is confident handling of light and atmosphere, and this painting shows him at his very best; a clear, open sky, crisp architectural forms, and richly textured foliage along the banks. A winding path and rocky foreground draw the eye into the composition, giving the scene both scale and a strong sense of place and presence.

The painting is signed “Niemann” at the lower left and is presented in an ornate gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition and ready to hang. The painting measures 30” x 50” and overall with the gilt frame measures 37” x 56”.

Note, the last photo shows the attached card from an antique dealer in New York, where the painting was listed at $38,000.
