Frank Moss Bennett, Oil on Canvas, English Cottage - Children with Rabbits - 1916
A charming and highly decorative oil on canvas by Frank Moss Bennett (1874-1952), this intimate cottage scene captures the artist’s well-known gift for narrative detail and warm domestic sentiment. Set before a rustic thatched doorway, the composition depicts two young children pausing to feed rabbits while an elderly woman sits quietly nearby, sewing or knitting in the shadowed entrance. Bennett animates the scene with an abundance of delightful details, including flowering hollyhocks and climbing roses, stone paving, a dog, and a small cart in the foreground, all painted with lively brushwork and a pleasing since of atmosphere. The painting is signed F M Bennett 1916.
The painting measures 14” x 10” and overall with the gilt frame measures 23 1/4” x 19 1/4”. The frame has some separation in the upper right and lower left corners with some cracking to the decorative elements, but is not distracting to the overall presentation.
