Maurice Ingres was born in France in 1855 and was a portraitist and mural painter active in both Europe and in the United States. He studied in Paris under prominent instructors such as Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Léon Cogniet before establishing an international practice. From about the mid-1880’s onward, Ingres maintained studios in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh. In 1908 he traveled to California to execute a series of portrait commissions (notably for the Potter Hotel in Santa Barbara), after which he returned to New York by 1915. His work includes not just individual portraits but also public murals and decorative commissions.
