Marie D'Orleans, Bronze Sculpture Depicting Jeanne D'Arc
Marie D'Orleans, Bronze Sculpture Depicting Jeanne D'Arc
This bronze sculpture of Jeanne d’Arc was designed by Princess Marie d’Orleans (1813-1839) and cast by H. Rouard, Founder, Paris. It depicts Joan of Arc standing in armor, with hands crossed over a sheathed sword, helmet at her side. Modeled in a Gothic revival style, the sculpture reflects the romantic nationalism of early 19th Century France. The original plaster was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1837 and a bronze version was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe in 1838 for the Château de Versailles.
This cast bears the artist’s signature inscribed on th side of teh base and the foundry inscription on the opposite side. It is mounted on a verde antico marble base with gilt bronze trim. Dimensions are 24” high x 9 1/2” wide and 8 1/2” deep. The left side and rear corner of the marble base appears to have been chipped with small cracks in the marble base, but the base appears to be a later replacement to the bronze, which is in very good condition.
