This 19th Century oil on board by William Ward Gill (1823-1894) presents a serene view of Ludlow Castle and the town of Ludlow, Shropshire, as seen from Whitecliffe. The composition captures the ruins nestled amid lush greenery, whith the parish church of St. Laurence rising prominently against the backdrop of Shropshire Hills. In the foreground, two figures provide a sense of scale and pastoral life, enhancing the romantic vision of the historic landscape.
Gill’s delicate brushwork conveys atmospheric depth, while his attention to natural detail reflects his training in Hereford and his association with a family of accomplished painters, including his brother Edmund Marriner Gill (“Waterfall Gill”).
The painting is an oil on board, measuring 10” x 14” (25 × 36cm) and overall in the gilt frame measuring 19” x 23”. It is signed lower left in red “W W Gill”. On the back there is an original handwritten label describing the subject, with historical notes. There is also a label with documentation by Gate House Galleries Art Restoration Lab (2015) noting varnish application Kamar PVA) Isolating varnish and acrylic . UV light reveals scattered in-painting to the sky and tree area; otherwise in very good condition with only minor surface rubs.
Artist Biography: William Ward Gill (1823-1894) was a British landscape painter from Hereford, best known for his evocative depictions of river and rural scenes. he exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Gill was the brother of Edmund Marriner Gill, celebrated for his dramatic waterfalls scenes, and came from a family of painters including Edmund Ward Gill and George Reynolds Gill. His works often reflect a romantic fascination with history, ruins, and the natural beauty of the English countryside.
