H. Johnson, Oil on Canvas, Soldier Seated on Stone Wall, 1867

$1,500.00

An engaging nineteenth century oil on canvas depicting a soldier in seventeenth century dress, seated on a stone wall with both hands resting on the hilt of his sword, which is propped against the wall’s corner. Fine detailing in the face and costume, warm burgundy and brown tones, and the reflective metal gorget with its rolled rope border gives this small cabinet painting considerable character.

The painting bears a monogram at lower left and ‘67, most likely for 1867. An inscription on the reverse and the frame’s nameplate identify the artist as H. Johnson, who was an early 19th Century British artist. The painting is presented in an ornate gilt frame that complements its historical subject.

The painting is in very good condition and has dimensions of 12 1/4” x 9 1/4” and overall with frame, which is also in fine condition measures 16 1/2’ x 14”.
