A particularly charming interior by celebrated British genre painter Frank Moss Bennett (1874–1952), At Peace with the World depicts a solitary gentleman enjoying a quiet moment of contentment following his meal. Seated comfortably beside a linen-covered table, he reads while smoking his pipe, surrounded by the evocative trappings of an earlier age.

Bennett was particularly admired for historical genre paintings recreating the domestic interiors, costumes, furnishings and customs of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. Rather than simply providing a setting for his figures, Bennett treated historic interiors and their objects with remarkable attention to detail. His interest in period costume and architecture was extensive, and examples of his work are represented in British public collections. 

In At Peace with the World, Bennett creates an especially atmospheric Jacobean interior. Dark paneled walls provide a rich backdrop for the seated gentleman, while a leaded-glass window at left admits cool daylight into the room. A hanging candle fixture provides a contrasting source of warm illumination above the table. Bennett’s carefully balanced treatment of these two sources of light gives the relatively intimate composition considerable depth and atmosphere.

The artist’s characteristic attention to period detail is evident throughout: the leaded window, paneled cabinetry, books, wine glass and bottle, partially carved joint of meat and table linens all contribute to the convincing historic setting. Particularly appealing is the prominently placed cabasset-style helmet beneath the table, which introduces a martial element into an otherwise peaceful domestic scene and provides a visual counterpoint to the title.

At the center of the composition is Bennett’s gently humorous characterization of his sitter. Rather than depicting a grand historical event, Bennett presents private contentment—the gentleman has eaten, has something to drink, a book in hand and a pipe to smoke. His relaxed posture and absorbed expression perfectly embody the painting’s title, At Peace with the World.

Condition

Very good overall condition, presenting attractively and ready for display. The canvas appears well preserved from the available photographs, with strong color and good overall legibility. Minor age-related surface characteristics and evidence of previous conservation may be present, consistent with a painting approaching a century in age.

The painting is housed in an elaborate wood and composition gilt period-style frame with scrolling foliate ornament. The frame displays slight age-related wear, and rubbing. The painting measures 17” x 13” and overall with frame measures 22 3/4” x 18 3/4”.
