This richly detailed historical genre painting by Alex de Andreis (1880-1929), presents a lively seventeenth-century interior centered on a jovial cook preparing and serving an elaborate meal for two finely dressed gentlemen. De Andreis was particularly known for romanticized scenes of cavaliers, guardsmen, courtiers, and other figures inspired by seventeenth-century European life, and this composition is especially appealing for its combination of narrative interest, period costume, and decorative detail.

At left, the smiling cook stands beside a heavily laden serving table surrounded by roasted meats, vessels, utensils, and cooking implements. Beyond him, two gentlemen are seated at a dining table dressed in richly colored period costume and surrounded by fine glassware, fruit, metalware, ceramics, and an elaborate lace table covering. The surrounding interior is equally detailed, with carved furniture, paneled walls, a tall case clock, framed pictures, a patterned carpet, and an assortment of decorative objects creating the atmosphere of an affluent seventeenth-century household.

Particularly notable is the wealth of still-life detail throughout the composition. Food, ceramics, glass, metalware, textiles, furniture, and architectural elements are all carefully observed, while the cook’s animated expression adds warmth and humor to the scene. The painting has strong decorative appeal and rewards close viewing through its many individual details.

The painting is presented in a decorative gilt frame with molded ornament of later manufacture.
