Painted in 1883, by Adolph Alexandre Lesrel (1839-1929), The Rehearsal is a refined example of Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel’s celebrated historical genre painting. Set within an opulent seventeenth-century interior, the composition depicts elegantly dressed musicians gathered for an intimate rehearsal. Lesrel was particularly admired for scenes such as this, in which richly costumed figures inhabit carefully constructed historical interiors filled with period furnishings, textiles, musical instruments, and architectural detail.

The composition is particularly effective in its use of vertical format and controlled interior light. The principal musicians occupy the foreground and middle distance, while the surrounding architecture and furnishings create a convincing sense of depth and enclosure. Lesrel lavishes attention on the contrasting surfaces of velvet, lace, polished wood, metal, and fabric, while the figures’ expressive gestures give the scene a sense of quiet interaction rather than a static historical tableau. The musical subject is characteristic of Lesrel’s fascination with the refined social and cultural life of earlier centuries and gives the painting both decorative richness and narrative appeal. The ivory tankard and gilt silver pokal are especially convincing.

The painting is presented in an elaborate gilt wood and composition frame with molded ornament, appropriately complementing the richness and period character of the composition.

Condition: The painting presents attractively overall. Fine age-related craquelure is visible in areas of the surface. Previous restoration includes areas of overpainting to portions of the floor, tablecloth, and black hats, with localized retouching around the central figure’s face and right side. Additional small areas of restoration are present in the upper-left and lower-right corners. Under raking light, some restored areas appear slightly more matte than the surrounding surface, but these do not detract significantly from the overall presentation. The reverse of the panel has been cradled.
