An oil on panel painting, by Dutch artist, Thomas Heeremans, Haarlem, (1640-41 - 1694/97) depicting the Port of Katwyk, signed and dated 1675. The panel painting depicts the ruins of the old lighthouse and church steeple with a horse drawn carriage and multitudes of people on shore, boats in the distance.
The panel measures 13” x 15 3/4” and overall in the gilt frame measures 17” x 19 3/4”. The painting is in very good condition and is bright and colorful. The antique gilt frame has a small repair on the top right and paint touchups to various nicks and abrasions, as would be expected from age and use.
Biography from AskArt: Thomas Heeremans was born as the first of nine children and was baptized in the Reformed Church in Haarlem in May 1641.
A notary's record from 1659 indicates that Heeremans may have studied under Van Everdingen. According to van Thiel-Stroman, this must refer to Cesar van Everdingen (1616/17-1678), as Allaert van Everdingen (1621-1675) had already moved from Haarlem to Amsterdam in 1652.
No influence of the classicist painter can be found in the work of Heeremans, by whom no figure studies are known today. However his style, particularly notable in his depiction of river scenes, is very much influenced by the slightly older Haarlem landscape painter Klaes Molenaer (1630-1676), though Heeremans brings a greater vibrancy both in palette and movement to the rather melancholic scenes of Moleaner.
He often painted the beach at Scheveningen and the village and ruins of Edgmond. His pictures frequently go in pairs.
Also active as a dealer, Heeremans joined the Guild of St. Luke in 1664. He was buried in Haarlem at the Noorderkerkhof on 22 January 1694.
