An oil on canvas painting by Dutch artist, Hendrik Mommers (1623-1693) depicting a Italianate style pastoral landscape with ruins. This beautiful 17th Century canvas by the artist depicts a woman in bright red skirt and blue coat riding side-saddle on a mule with her guide and a shepherd among cattle and sheep. A castle ruin behind the group, with a distant man walking through the arched entrance. In the further distance are houses, mountains and blue skies with puffy white clouds.

Mommers was a student of Nicolaes Berchem. He visited Italy around 1644 at the end of his apprenticeship and began painting Italian style pastoral scenes such as this. He is also known for scenes of vegetable sellers.

The painting measures 24” x 31” and is housed in a an antique gloss black frame with walnut inlay with overall measurements of 33 1/2” x 40 3/8”. The painting has been professionally cleaned by Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration, Chicago in 2025. The frame with minor nicks and abrasions as would be expected from age and use.
