Ferdinand Stifter, Oil on Panel, "Neckerei"
Ferdinand Stifter, Oil on Panel, "Neckerei"
An oil on panel painting by Austrian artist, Ferdinand Stifter, signed and dated 1894 entitled “Neckerei” which translates in English to playful teasing. In an art context, it can also carry the sense of flirtation, banter, or gallant teasing. In the scene, a seated young woman in a luminous pale blue gown recoils with amused reserve as two male companions lean toward her across a richly draped table, their expressions suggesting playful banter and courtship. Stifter’s handling of costume, gesture, and facial expression gives the composition a lively narrative quality, while the carefully rendered cabinet, curtain, glassware, and textiles enrich the domestic setting.
The painting is house din an ornate gilt frame that complement the painting. The panel measures 12” x 10” and overall with the frame measures 22 3/4” x 20 1/2”. The painting is in good condition with bright, clean colors. There is some retouching around the edges of the panel, likely due to previous edge rubbing with the frame. The frame has had minor touch-up of the gilt paint.
