School of Lucas van Uden (Flemish, 1595-1672), Oil on Canvas, Travelers in a Landscape

$3,500.00

This luminous and intricately detailed oil on canvas exemplifies the hallmarks of 17th Century Flemish landscape painting in the circle or manner of Lucas van Uden, one of Antwerp’s most celebrated landscape artists. Van Uden, a contemporary of Jan Brueghel the Younger and a collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens, is revered for his panoramic views, richly wooded terrains, and masterful use of atmospheric perspective.

In this composition, the viewer is invited to travel along a winding path that leads from a rustic village nestled under the boughs of a towering oak into a sweeping valley bathed in golden evening light. The left side of the canvas features a prominent church spire rising above clustered rooftops, framed by lush, meticulously rendered trees. Figures animate the scene: peasants and travelers on horseback traverse the road, while a seated man in a red cloak in the foreground lends narrative interest in depth. The eye is drawn across the rolling hills to a distant fortified town or castle perched on the horizon beneath a sky glowing with expansive clouds tinged in coral, rose, and gold. The painter employs a warm palette and sensitive brushwork that recall van Uden’s keen attention to the subtleties of light and nature. The rhythmic movement of landforms and the subtle gradation of tonality reinforce a sense of serenity an order - qualities prized in Northern Baroque landscape art.

While unsigned, this work reflects the compositional sophistication and stylistic vocabulary associated with van Uden’s studio or his followers, particularly in the balanced distribution of figures, architecture, and topography. The original canvas is present in a later finely molded ebonized frame that complements the period aesthetic.

The painting itself presents well, but may have been over cleaned at some point in its’s past. The painting measures 23 3/4” x 32” (sight) and with frame measures 34 1/4” x 42 1/2”.
